Caring Close to Home: The Story and Services of the Free Clinic of Powhatan
Tucked in the Village of Powhatan County, the Free Clinic of Powhatan (FCP) is more than just a healthcare provider—it’s a lifeline for hundreds of neighbors who otherwise might go without essential healthcare. For years, FCP has quietly and steadily built a reputation as a place where compassion and quality go hand in hand, and where every patient is treated with dignity and respect.
A Mission Rooted in Compassion
At its core, the Free Clinic of Powhatan exists for one reason: to build a healthier community, one person at a time. It’s a mission that has never wavered, even as the community’s needs have grown and evolved. The clinic serves residents not only in Powhatan but also in neighboring counties like Chesterfield, Cumberland, and Amelia—rural communities where access to healthcare can often feel out of reach.
A Growing Spectrum of Services
What began with basic medical care has grown into a robust network of services tailored to meet the whole-health needs of patients. Today, FCP offers:
Primary medical care, including specialty referrals; prescription assistance, lab and diagnostic testing; women’s health services; case management services; and patient education.
Dental services like hygiene and restorative care, x-rays, periodontal cleanings, and dentures.
Mental health counseling to support emotional and behavioral wellness.
Wellness and prevention programs, including nutrition education and health screenings.

And it doesn’t stop there. Case managers work one-on-one with patients to ensure they can access food, transportation, and other resources that support overall well-being. For many, the clinic is not just a place to receive care—it’s a trusted partner in navigating life’s challenges.
Bridging the Gap in Rural Healthcare
In Powhatan and surrounding counties, gaps in transportation, insurance coverage, and healthcare access have long made it difficult for residents to receive consistent, preventive care. FCP was founded to change that. By offering services completely free of charge to those who qualify, the clinic helps reduce emergency room visits, catch health concerns early, and promote a healthier, more connected community.
A History of Service, A Future of Hope
The clinic first opened its doors in 2008 by community health activist Connie Moslow, in partnership with Bon Secours St. Francis, the Powhatan Board of Supervisors, and a dedicated group of citizens. Since then, it has grown into a vital part of the local healthcare safety net—supported by medical professionals, community partners, donors, and a small but mighty staff. Together, they’ve created a place where every visit feels personal and every patient is known by name.
Today, the Free Clinic of Powhatan is not just filling healthcare gaps—it’s setting a standard for what rural health equity can look like.
