Breaking Down Barriers: What Keeps People from Getting Care—and How We Help

For many people, going to the doctor is a routine part of life.

But for the patients served by the Free Clinic of Powhatan, getting care isn’t always that simple.

Behind every missed appointment or delayed diagnosis, there’s often a barrier—sometimes visible, sometimes not. As we continue our work in the community, we’re taking a closer look at what keeps people from getting the care they need—and how those barriers can be removed.

The Real Barriers to Healthcare

For uninsured and underserved adults in the counties we serve, healthcare challenges go far beyond cost.

Some of the most common barriers include:

  • Cost and Lack of Insurance Without insurance, even a basic doctor’s visit can feel out of reach. Many patients delay care until symptoms become severe.

  • Transportation Challenges Reliable transportation isn’t always available, especially in rural areas. A missed ride can mean a missed appointment, and missed care.

  • Work and Family Responsibilities Patients are often balancing multiple jobs, caregiving, and family obligations. Taking time off for an appointment isn’t always possible.

  • Fear or Uncertainty For those who haven’t seen a provider in years, there can be anxiety about what they’ll hear, or whether they’ll be able to afford treatment.

How the Free Clinic of Powhatan Removes Barriers

At the Free Clinic of Powhatan, we’ve built our model of care around one simple idea: healthcare should meet people where they are.

Here’s how we’re working to remove these barriers every day:

  • Free, High-Quality Care All services are provided at no cost to eligible patients, removing one of the biggest obstacles to care.

  • Coordinated Appointments and Follow-Up We don’t just treat a single issue, we help patients stay on track with ongoing care, referrals, and next steps.

  • Telehealth Options for Mental Health For patients who can’t make it into the clinic, telehealth counseling provides a flexible, accessible option for support.

  • Case Management and Support Services Our team works alongside patients to navigate challenges like scheduling, referrals, and access to additional resources.

Why Removing Barriers Matters

When barriers are removed, everything changes.

Patients are more likely to:

  • Seek care earlier

  • Manage chronic conditions effectively

  • Avoid emergency room visits

  • Maintain stable, healthier lives

Access to care doesn’t just improve individual health, it strengthens families, workplaces, and the entire community.

A Community Effort

Removing barriers to healthcare doesn’t happen alone.

It takes:

  • Donors who believe in accessible care

  • Volunteers who give their time and expertise

  • Community partners who expand what’s possible

Together, these efforts ensure that patients don’t have to choose between their health and their circumstances.

Looking Ahead

At the Free Clinic of Powhatan, we know that healthcare access is about more than opening our doors, it’s about making sure people can walk through them.

And once they do, we’re here every step of the way.
