When Pain Doesn’t Have to Be Permanent: A Patient Story of Healing and Hope

Updated: Dec 29, 2025

For more than two years, a new patient lived with constant shoulder pain.

What began as discomfort gradually became debilitating. Over time, the pain worsened to the point where she could barely move her arm. Her ability to work was affected. Everyday tasks became exhausting. Despite multiple visits to urgent care, she found no lasting relief, and no clear path forward.

When she came to the Free Clinic of Powhatan, her pain had significantly intensified over the prior six weeks.

Finding Answers — and a Path to Care

At the clinic, our medical team conducted a thorough evaluation and quickly recognized the severity of her condition. Rather than continuing temporary fixes, they focused on what she truly needed: specialized care.

Through the Free Clinic of Powhatan’s referral network, she received an urgent orthopedic referral. Within a month, she underwent a pro bono rotator cuff surgery; a procedure that typically costs around $80,000.

For someone without insurance, this kind of care would normally be impossible to access.

But at the Free Clinic, care is never defined by what a patient can afford.

Healing Beyond the Operating Room

Today, this patient is actively participating in physical therapy through an Access Now referral, continuing her recovery with the support she needs to regain strength, mobility, and independence.

Recently, she stopped by the clinic to share an update.

She told our team how much progress she’s made and how grateful she is to finally live without the constant pain that shaped her life for years.

Her words stayed with us:

“God opened the doors to an amazing clinic. It’s a miracle that I was able to have my surgery through a referral from the Clinic. Your clinic is a gift from God to the community.”

Why Stories Like This Matter

This patient’s outcome wasn’t the result of luck. It was the result of community support, medical partnerships, and donor generosity working together.

At the Free Clinic of Powhatan, we don’t just provide primary care. We help patients access life-changing specialty care, surgeries, and follow-up services, often at no cost to them, so they can return to work, care for their families, and live without unnecessary pain.

Every referral made, every surgery completed, and every recovery supported is possible because someone chose to give.

Your Support Makes Care Possible

When you give to the Free Clinic of Powhatan, you are doing more than funding appointments or covering medical supplies.

You are:

  • Opening doors to specialty care

  • Removing barriers to healing

  • Restoring dignity and hope

  • Making outcomes like this patient’s possible

Because of you, pain doesn’t have to be permanent and healing doesn’t have to be out of reach.

Thank you for believing in a community where compassionate care is available when it’s needed most.
