About the Free Clinic of Powhatan

HISTORY OF THE CLINIC

In the summer of 2007, Connie Moslow, a community health activist, approached the Powhatan/Chesterfield Health Department, the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors, and small group of citizens to discuss the idea of establishing a free clinic that would provide medical services to the uninsured, low-income adult residents of the County.  The idea was embraced by all.  In the fall of 2007, the Bon Secours Care-A-Van began visiting Powhatan County monthly.  From her vision and with the assistance of numerous organizations and community residents, the Free Clinic of Powhatan was established in September 2008 at its within the Powhatan County Health Department facility.

Fast forward a decade – it became evident that more space was needed to fully care for the patients and provide for additional services and staff.  The Campaign for Health and Hope was launched to raise $2 million for renovations to the Department of Public Works building at 2320 Skaggs Road.  After much work from community partners, foundations, donors and volunteers, the new Clinic opened its doors on March 4, 2021!

The 3300 square foot clinic includes a welcoming and spacious waiting area, fully equipped lab, two medical exam rooms, two mental health counseling rooms and a two chair dental clinic for on-site dental care.  For the first time, staff and volunteers will have offices, a conference room and a small kitchen!  During construction, the Clinic received CARES money that allowed significantly improved infection control processes to be implemented.  All surfaces, lights, floors and ceilings were treated with an antimicrobial layer and a specialized air filtration system was installed.

Executive Director, Connie Moslow is humbled by the outpouring of support.  “So many people helped make this a reality.  Our community really came together to support us.”  The Campaign for Health and Hope will continue to raise money for further expansion of patient services and providers.
