About Us

We are dedicated to our mission of building a healthier community one person at a time.

At the Free Clinic of Powhatan, we want to improve the health of our patients.  Patients who regain their health and become informed about managing their illnesses

will help our community be better and stronger.

History

Fifteen years of commitment
to the health of our community.

2008: The Clinic opened and provided free services using Bon Secours Care-A-Van at the Powhatan Fairgrounds.

2009: The Clinic moved into donated space in the Powhatan Health Department Building.  The first part-time nurse practitioner was hired.   Our partnership with Access Now began, a program established by the Richmond Academy of Medicine to link patients in need with donated specialty physician services.

2010: The Clinic began offering dental hygiene and mental health services.

2011: The Clinic started the Women’s Health Program and began a partnership with Goochland Cares and VCU to expand the dental program to include fillings, extractions and dentures.

2012: The Clinic began offering free eye exams and glasses through various partners.

2014: The Clinic began to offer case management services to patients to help connect them with other resources they may need.

2015:  The Clinic expanded the Behavioral Health program to 2 days a week and added a psychiatrist to the program.

2019: Bursting at the seams, the Clinic began the Campaign for Health and Hope to raise $2 million for a new Clinic.   The Clinic also established a unique and replicable counseling program with Powhatan High School and Middle School that provides counseling services at the school.

2021: Through the hard work of the Free Clinic staff, volunteers and donors, the newly renovated medical and dental clinic opened at 2320 Skaggs Road in March 2021.

2022:  Dental clinic opens 2 days a week, begins making dentures,.  Electronic medical records implemented.  Translators on call to assist in our Hispanic patient care.

The Clinic is thrilled to share our ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility. After three years of fundraising efforts, our Board of Directors, clinic team members, community leaders, supporters, and patients came together to officially open the new facility.

The Free Clinic is the only safety net provider for the uninsured and low-income residents in the community.

We treat the whole patient by providing a combination of care that addresses not only primary care needs but also chronic and specialty care, medication counseling, behavioral and women’s health, case management and health education.  We now offer dentistry in-house as well.

With more than a decade of commitment to the health of our community, the Clinic is dedicated to building a healthier community one person at a time. As a free and charitable clinic, the Free Clinic of Powhatan is a unified partner in the effort to improve healthcare access across Virginia by providing a smart, affordable, and high-quality alternative for those who lack health insurance. #FreeClinicsCare
