Services and Programs

The Free Clinic of Powhatan provides or makes arrangements for the following services and programs to registered patients:


Primary medical care is provided on Mondays (3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) and Thursdays (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) by appointment only.


The Free Clinic of Powhatan works with several dentists in the area who volunteer their time and Goochland Cares to provide dental services to our patients.  Patients must meet the same eligibility criteria for seeking dental services as apply to medical services, however, patients can have either Medicare or Medicaid and still be eligible for dental services.  All dental care services are by appointment only.

Beginning in mid April 2021, the Free Clinic will open their on-site dental clinic.  Watch for updates!

Mental Health Counseling

The Free Clinic of Powhatan provides mental health counseling for patients dealing with minor to moderate mental health care problems.  The service is provided by our mental health counselor on Mondays and Thursdays during Clinic hours by appointment only.  In addition, the Clinic has a psychiatrist who sees patients on the fourth Thursday of each month from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. by appointment only.

The Free Clinic also provides on-site counseling services to students on location at Powhatan Middle and High Schools.  Issues addressed include depression, anxiety, poor school performance, anger management, suicidal thoughts and ADHD.  School counselors can provide an immediate referral to this program.

Income guidelines for the mental health program have been expanded.  Please contact the Free Clinic to see if you are eligible to receive counseling and psychiatric care at no charge.



Women’s Program

The Women’s Program provides pelvic and breast exams, PAP tests, and education.  Referrals are available for mammograms and bone density testing.

The Women’s Program is held on the third Thursday of every other month from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In order to use this program, you must first have registered as a Free Clinic of Powhatan patient.  The Women’s Program is by appointment only.

Specialty Care Referrals

Referrals to a network of specialty physicians through ACCESS NOW are available as deemed medically necessary by the Clinic’s medical providers.

Diagnostic Tests and Lab Services

Diagnostic tests are available as deemed medically necessary by the Clinic’s medical providers.

Lab appointments occur on Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. by appointment only.

Prescription Drug Assistance

The Free Clinic of Powhatan works with the Powhatan Walmart Pharmacy, Cross-Over Ministry, and various pharmaceutical companies to provide medications to our patients.  The Clinic provides the prescribed medications at no cost to our patients.
